George Washington’s Dentures: Were They Really Made of Wood?

Did you know that George Washington never wore a wooden denture?  Although this myth is untrue, George Washington did wear multiple partial dentures made by several different dentists.  These dentures were made out of ivory, lead, and other human teeth.  The only full set of Washington’s dentures that remain is preserved at Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens.  Currently, dentures are usually made of acrylic. To learn about modern dentures, click here.
